Tomaz Simatovic was born in 1978, in Koper Slovenia, and grew up in Izola, a small fishermen town. Currently he lives in Salzburg.

Tomaz is an experimental choreographer, performance artist and teacher of dance. His choreographic work is an exploration on presence, representation and movement in performing arts. Aside dance, philosophy, literature and everyday life, he as well seeks inspiration in sound and music, which intrigue his creative rhythm, and imagination. Predominantly an aesthete, Tomaz approaches and develops performance through concept, research, choreography, and writing. Many describe his work as fierce, humorous and thought-provoking. The frankness of his aesthetics has already triggered discrepancies in opinions, thus dividing audience in experiencing the oddness of emotional polarities.

Tomaz graduated in dance performance at SEAD Salzburg (AT), and gained his MA in choreography at ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem (NL), where he researched on relationships between choreography and modern figuration. His thesis ‚Performing the Figure: a method towards figuration of the human body in live performance‘ is a study that proposes choreography as a device for figuration in performing arts. Throughout his ongoing practice Tomaz is developing concepts such as Choreographed Figuration, A pulsating spine and Music makes me through choreography, performance, lecturing, and teaching dance. He is teaching dance and choreography related practices as a guest or as a resident faculty at various academies, and institutions with professional and semi-professional program in dance training and development. As a performer he works internationally, performing works of physical theater, abstract dance, improvisation as well as site-specific pieces.

From 2009 Tomaz creates his own work, and focuses on developing his choreographic methodology. Currently Tomaz works in Salzburg where he is a member of tanz_house, teaches dance at Mozarteum University/Carl-Orff-Institute, and creates work with established support from the governmental authorities, and venues that support and work with dance and performance in Salzburg. The themes and inspirations of his works for the season 2013-2015 are music and empathy in choreography and performance.
